Tonic Gold™ and the Alchemical Tradition
Tonic Gold elixir is the product of years of study and experimentation in the science of traditional alchemy, as it has existed since ancient times. Until now, this celestial golden elixir could only be acquired by an arduous search through secret channels. Due to a fortuitous chain of events, Tonic Gold, made in India by alchemist Petri Murien, is now available to people in the West.
Throughout time the art of alchemy, or divine chemistry, has been preserved and passed down from generation to generation by adepts who have chosen to remain hidden in order to safeguard the integrity of this esoteric tradition. Practicing the science of alchemy requires extraordinary discipline and spiritual commitment, which is why the true alchemist is an exceptional person, often secluded or working in secret. Today, the number of practicing adepts trained by master alchemists in the authentic alchemical arts, including the Eastern and Western traditions, is estimated at fewer than a handful.
Petri Murien is one of these exceedingly rare alchemists alive in the world today. Originally from France , Petri was educated as a scientist in California and then faced a crucial career decision: whether to join a world-renowned paleontologist studying early man in Africa, or go to India in pursuit of a vast, uncharted body of knowledge. As it turned out, Petri traveled to India , where he settled in 1976. For more than thirty years he has been deeply immersed in the study of the ancient tradition of alchemy. He received the transmission of “mercurial knowledge” from two alchemical teachers, one of whom was Indian and the other, a European bishop.
With this training as a foundation, Petri continued to study and work among the alembics and flasks, the fire, water, earth and air of his laboratory. Using himself as the test subject, Petri worked through complex and dangerous experiments over a period of eleven years to unearth the alchemical secrets of philosophical mercury, or what the alchemists of the Middle Ages called their “Mercurius.” Eventually he received the knowledge of the preparation of the universal prima materia —the waters of life, also known as the “Celestial Ganges,” or the quintessence—which is the basis of all alchemy. Since then Petri has come to understand the mysteries of solar and lunar energies; planetary potencies; precious metals, gems and stones and the processes of the great circulation of Nature, or “bringing Heaven down to Earth.” One of his most valuable creations is what has been known by alchemists for millennia as “potable gold,” a true celestial alchemical gold, now made available as Tonic Gold.
To be an alchemist requires a sincere, selfless researcher of exceptional integrity, commitment and simplicity of heart, since academic studies and book learning do not accomplish anything in the alchemist's world. The true alchemist must be grounded in a relationship with the Divine while he or she struggles to gain knowledge, finally coming to understand and see Nature as a whole, not as separate parts or entities.
Petri Murien writes about what it means to be an alchemist:
Paracelsus (1493-1541), a German-Swiss alchemist and physician who was one of the greatest hermetic philosophers of all times, and particularly of the Renaissance, once said about our art: “Our science should be based upon a perception of the truth and not on mere belief or opinion. Information received from men can only assist us in forming opinions, but it constitutes no knowledge. True knowledge consists in a direct recognition of the truth and is taught by Nature herself.”
It is therefore easy to understand that alchemy is a revealed science or divine gift. No man, no matter how great, educated and intelligent, can discover this science without a divine intervention and revelation, as this knowledge depends entirely upon the grace of God and His divine dispensation. God, the great Architect of the universe, grants it to whomever He wants and is pleased with, but He can also remove it, and this by any means, whenever He is displeased.
While studying and practicing the science of the macrocosm or universal Creation one can meet, experience and become one with the universal Creator by dissolving in Him like a salt in its first water. Thus alchemy is a royal spiritual path beyond all religions, which can lead us to the highest spiritual achievements.
The alchemist seeks to reveal the workings of Nature and its relationship with the outer Cosmos or outer Nature, from gross to subtle, thus realizing the interaction of everything with everything. With this knowledge he or she can see that everything is of the nature of everything else, that what is above is of the nature of what is below, and what is below is of the same nature as what is above. Therefore an alchemist must also be a mystic in order to communicate with subtle levels of Nature and the celestial energies that it employs.
The celestial structure of the universe is normally invisible to earthly eyes, but through practice the alchemist can transform and refine himself so that the inner eye opens in order to intuitively perceive the subtle energies or patterns of Nature. He then becomes able to make what is invisible visible; in other words he can transmute energy into matter or reverse matter into energy. The alchemist can operate the mutation of the four elements, one into another, depending on his needs and according to his wishes. Like a celestial architect, the alchemist can verify the unity and similarity of the macrocosm and microcosm by duplicating the principles of cosmic creation. Most importantly, the alchemist can capture and harvest the fundamental living principles and radiances of the universe and transform them into substances of great value for the purpose of healing and benefiting humankind and furthering the human possibility.
Alchemy is a science in which cosmic principles, subtle energies, harmonies and the elements of Nature are engaged through artful skill and harnessed in a process of transformation, transmutation and evolution. It is a complex art that has carried and preserved ancient knowledge through the millennia. Alchemy deals with the transformation of three aspects: body (matter), soul and spirit. Alchemy in the form of its specific products—tonics and elixirs, for example—can heal, strengthen, rejuvenate, purify and even transform us.
Profoundly spiritual, alchemy is concerned with universals and takes the scientific attitude of believing only after seeing and verifying. At the same time, alchemy blends science and mysticism into a harmonious approach to life and can prove that the microcosm and the macrocosm—from an atom to a galaxy—are one and identical while also diversified. Petri Murien explains, “The alchemical vision of Nature allows the alchemist to absorb the knowledge of the macrocosm and to understand its play, its actions and reactions and its effects, thus entering the knowledge of natural magic of the elements. This is spiritual alchemy, a very positive thinking, because direct knowledge and direct experience give us intense faith which allows us to use consciousness like a fluidic instrument.”
Hundreds of years ago alchemists were the first chemists. They used their discoveries about light, atoms, molecules and states of matter to understand the cosmos from a spiritual perspective. These discoveries were passed on to scientists who became more interested in using the principles of chemistry to prove the laws of nature and the universe than to contemplate and realize the mysteries held therein. Empirical science, as distinct from the esoteric sciences, developed into a purely rational and materialistic approach to knowledge.
The ancients had a striking mythical image called the Ourobouros that represented the totality of the alchemical process—a dragon or snake swallowing its own tail. It is a symbol of the great circulation of Nature: what was above as the very subtle spirit descends and becomes—by adaptation through a process of heat and digestion—the below, or earthy and fixed. Then by reversing the process, what is below—fixed, heavy and earthy—ascends and gradually becomes volatile and subtle as the above. By this great circulation of Nature, from above to below and from below to above, the circle is closed. Homer, the Greek philosopher, called it the golden chain because Nature is in reality a chain, in itself like a circle, where each link supports the other, thus making a chain from Heaven to Earth. In alchemy, this chain is the series of substances and chemical states that appear in the course of the alchemical process. It also refers to the chain of alchemical adepts, who link Heaven with Earth, beginning with the great Egyptian alchemist Hermes Trismegistus, who wrote on his Emerald Tablet, “Make that what is above become like what is below, then what is below returns to what is above, thus creating the miracles of one thing.” In these few simple words he concealed and summarized all of the knowledge, practice and mysteries of the Hermetic (alchemical) science.
Hermetic philosophers use four elements in their work—air, fire, water and earth—but to attain their goal they endeavor to capture the perfect and harmoniously balanced fifth essence called the quintessence, or universal substance. This quintessence, or universal food, is spirit in the form of congealed light and is the life principle of all things. It is virgin—that is, not yet evolved or created into any specific thing or quality, but able to become anything in particular. This universal essence, or quintessence, exists everywhere in the universe, but in a diluted form and unripe like a green fruit. Because Nature cannot and does not produce the quintessence in a pure and concentrated form without human help, true alchemists and Hermetic philosophers are the servants, helpers, or attendants of Nature, which seems to say, “Help me and I shall help you.”
When alchemists speak of bringing Heaven down to Earth they are referring to bringing down celestial influences and qualities to be incarnated or embodied in the Earth plane. According to the teachings of alchemy, the sun, as the center of our solar system, is the literal and symbolic source of divine light on this planet. The undifferentiated light of the sun that has been polarized by planetary influences carries all the celestial energies and virtues of the planets and stars to us in a continuous flux, in a rhythmic cadence like the ocean—wave after wave of cosmic life force in the form of light. This celestial fire that is of the nature of everything is known to ancient alchemists as “ ojas,” or the sperm of the worlds. It is a celestial seed that entirely permeates our space and atmosphere. The air we breathe carries this life force, giving life not only to human beings, but also to the three kingdoms of Nature. These three kingdoms of Nature—mineral, vegetable and animal—owe their very existence to this unique life-giving vital principle; for this reason it is called the universal medicine, for if it is the principle of life, it is automatically the principle of health.
Describing this universal essence Petri Murien notes:
This unique and wonderful subject of Nature, when not yet determined, is also the sperm of Nature. It particularizes itself to each kingdom to become the particular sperm of each species. In plants it congeals and reduces itself within the vegetable oil or sulphurous principle to further fix itself through digestion into a seminal point in the seed. During the growth of the plants, this vegetal astral spirit dissolves the sulphurous principle, and then they intimately join together into an oleaginous fluid and sublime into nectar and pollen. These are gathered by bees, brought back to the hive, digested and separated into honey and wax.
In animals the quintessence, or universal spirit, becomes the most refined extract of the different organs of the body, carrying along with itself every possible detail, information and impressions of that body sublimated into a concentrated juice which coagulates into an animal sperm ready to reproduce itself to almost infinity.
In the mineral kingdom it acts according to the same principles, although because of its slow and tedious action within that kingdom, it is not so obvious to the human understanding. What the quintessence does in one season in the vegetable kingdom may take hundreds of years in the mineral kingdom.
The unripe quintessence is plentiful in polarized sunlight at certain periods of the moon; it is also found in air, water and earth. This primordial life energy is more subtle than the most subtle matter; it is the underlying power and the engine of the whole world.
Alchemical science is sometimes called “celestial farming,” in that what is above as heaven—with all its celestial, volatile virtues and qualities—is brought down to Earth and harvested through alchemical art. For that reason the great philosopher Homerus once said that a good farmer is better than a state philosopher for practicing alchemy.
How the alchemist harvests the quintessence is a supreme secret that is passed on only from adept to apprentice; then the apprentice must work on alchemical operations for many years before he can perfect the art. The universal “chaotic waters” (quintessence) are all that is needed to perfect all alchemical processes and the science of alchemy itself. The four elements exist in the quintessence, but in a confused state. An alchemist must know how to bring order to this chaos by extracting the light from the darkness—more precisely, by separating the superior waters from the inferior ones and gently, slowly, with great patience and without violence extracting the quintessence, the elements and the principles. This process mirrors Creation itself and produces ripened quintessence in a form that is exceptionally accessible and beneficial to the human body, mind and spirit.
The alchemist's work consists of attracting and harvesting this celestial fire, then incorporating it into air and water. It is alchemically cooked and digested until it naturally separates into two parts that contain the four elements and appear as a solid and a liquid—one earth and one water, one red and one white: the sun and moon of the philosophers. Describing the spagyric process, Petri Murien writes, “The art of ‘spagyry' is to separate and rejoin, or dissolve and coagulate. The practice of alchemy revolves around this technique—to dissolve is to separate and to coagulate is to rejoin what was separate. Every time matter is dissolved and coagulated, it increases in quality and potency—achieving the highest vibrational potential possible . ”
The “earth” of celestial origin becomes the seed of metals that can be precipitated for further alchemical operations. The alchemist must water this alchemical earth with the celestial water—not too much, not too little—because if this earth is too dry the seed will perish, but if it is too wet, the seed will drown and die before it can develop, vegetate and bear fruit. The perfect balance of elemental forces must be established and sustained in order to bring life into it.
Depending on the degree of preparation, philosophers have given dozens of different names to this universal spirit, including: the bird of Hermes, the eagle, the vulture, the doves of Diana, the astral spirit, the dragon Ourobouros that bites its own tail, the green lion, the grease of the mercurial wind, the crow, the lead, the laton, the liver of Prometheus, the antimony of the sages, the salt of sapience, the Sal-ammonic and sal-harmonic, the virgin earth, the milk of the sun and the nectar of the moon, the very sour vinegar, the philosophical mercury, the universal mercury, the magnesia, the red lion, the red salt, the astral gold, the metallic seed and the prima materia metallorum . They have also called it ojas , which means the sperm of the world.
Petri Murien has achieved the esoteric precipitation of gold, silver and metallic mercury from the fundamental substance of the ojas , or universal spirit. Describing the alchemical chain of events involved in capturing the universal spirit and creating potable gold in particular, he has written:
Ancient alchemists considered potable gold to be the soul of the world. In its most subtle emanation it is a very active volatile universal spirit and we call it “our mercury,” but when it descends to join the orb of the world, then it thickens and coagulates to become the soul, and we call it “our sulphur” or tincture, or adamic earth, or black sulphur of Nature. Still further down it solidifies into a hard body and we call it “our salt” or magnesia. Thus through successive contractions and limitations He imposes upon Himself, the undifferentiated universal vital Spirit thickens into souls, or individual characters, then finally solidifies into dense and heavy bodies.
Alchemical references to many substances like “mercury” and “cinnabar” (a red mineral, the principal ore of mercury), should generally be understood philosophically or symbolically, rather than physically. Alchemical mercury—which Western adepts often personified as Mercurius when precipitated in its sublime state—refers to the philosophical mercury which is obtained through a process of transmutation. This is a symbolic reference to universal principles and not to determined elements.
Tonic Gold is obtained by a series of alchemical processes—a descent and gradual corporification, or embodiment, of the universal spirit into the world. Alchemists call potable gold “a spiritual and philosophical cinnabar descended from above.” The phrase “spiritual and philosophical cinnabar” refers to the process of transmutation, the great mystery achieved in the alchemical process in the laboratory.
It is possible to make many other kinds of metal tinctures using the physical element itself as a foundation ingredient, but these tinctures have started with a “particular”—that is, the physical element—rather than with the “virgin” quintessence. To explain why Tonic Gold is so potent and how this true celestial gold compares to “gold tinctures” that are currently on the market, Petri Murien elaborates:
Borrowing our knowledge from Nature, it is known to us that what is alkaline is earthy, fixed, fire-proof and of a male nature; but once putrefied, opened and sublimated it releases its volatile etheric oily acid which is of a celestial female nature. For that reason, our potable gold is a female philosophical cinnabar of celestial origin, in opposition to ordinary mineral cinnabar, which is of an alkaline earthy male nature.
Now let us consider the following fact: our potable gold, which is a celestial female cinnabar, is the unique and only prima materia which all Hermetic philosophers since very ancient times spoke and wrote about in their writings, calling it the universal way or universal process. All other processes are called “the particulars” because their work and preparation start with a definite substance, already existing and determined in Nature, and with a particular aspect and character, as compared to our universal chaotic waters [quintessence] not yet defined as anything in particular.
Those “particular” processes could be as many as there are ores and metals available in the world, all depending on the time period, country, tradition, intellectual fashion and limited understanding of the chemists and alchemists. Several particular processes have been evolved with more or less success: some with lead acetate; others with antimony; some with arsenic or some complex alloys or amalgams of mercury with gold, silver, antimony and iron. Some have been looking into the animal and vegetable kingdoms as well, expecting to find there a particular tincture for metals.
Henceforth, it is clear and easy to understand that our potable gold, Tonic Gold, is the principle of fertility, of multiplication and prosperity of all things. It is a metallic yeast, a ferment, and a spermatic gold with a wonderful fragrance. Due to its mercurial-aqueous nature, it is endowed with a tremendous power to penetrate, open, dissolve and ferment, but also to reduce and congeal; therefore it is a reducer.
It is the instrument, our alembic, the filter of Nature; with it all our philosophical operations are achieved. It digests, sublimes, precipitates, fixes and calcinates according to the intention of Nature. It is not only a vegetable gold but a metallic fungus—a substance with an unimaginable potential for research in medicine, geriatrics, biology, genetics, nuclear physics, metallurgy and other fields of more secret and mystical investigation.
The Tonic Gold elixir combines potable gold with a mixture of potent herbal oils. As potable gold is the essence of the sun in digestible form, this elixir has a strong effect on the solar plexus. In general, Tonic Gold has the capacity to simultaneously balance and harmonize throughout the different dimensions of our beings, from the gross body to the most subtle elements of spirit and soul.
